The International Day of Forest Protection has been marked for 37 years already. On the General Assembly of European Agricultural Confederation session in 1971 it has been decided that the first day of spring, March 21, will be marked as the International Day of Forests. Then the UN's Organisation for Food and Agriculture (FAO) endorsed the idea, believing that such an event can contribute to the greater awareness of forest protection anf forest ecosystem. Hrvatske šume devoted this year's International Day of Forest Protection to the protection of forests from the forest fires. The workers of Hrvatske šume prevented numerous fires, and through a good cooperation with the fire fighting units the conditions were created for the well-timed prevention of catastrophic consequences. Hrvatske šume invest into forest protection around 100 million kuna each year. The season of intense fire protection lasts from June 1st till September 15th. Depending of the weather conditions, it can also be extended.
